A man who was trained on the Exmouth Journal has received an MBE for his services to the newspaper industry. Ian Dowell, editor of the Birmingham Evening Mail for 12 years was born in Exmouth and joined the Journal from the local grammar school.
Trained by the legendary Journal editor, W. G. "Bill" Gorfin, he left to join Woodrow Wyatt's publishing company in Oxfordshire and, at the age of 22, was appointed editor of the Wallingford News in Berkshire. He moved to the Birmingham Post & Mail 30 years ago.
Dowell, aged 58, whose Evening Mail has won 10 newspaper of the year awards, primarily for campaigning, sits on the committee of the Press Complaints Commission. He said "Bill Gorfin was an extraordinary man and taught me all I know. My years on the Journal were some of the happiest of my career.
