Soccer was played enthusiastically in the school, usually in the Autumn term with Rugby taking over after New Year. Around 1957 there was a "democratic vote" that decided to abandon soccer in favour of rugby as the sole winter team game for boys! It is rumoured that the result owed much to the fact that Stuart Fudge was a former St. Luke's man and a fair rugby player himself. Look at the picture for Colts Rugby in 1956. It is clear from this that most of the players also appear in the rugby shots of the period as well. In this picture are
BACK ROW: Chris Newman, TBA, Colin Stuart, Bob Bannister, Mike England, "Beanie" Green, Johnny Lucas
FRONT ROW: Jim Burrows, TBA, Andrew Gibson, Roger Newman, Phil Bamsey.

This was probably the last Colts picture before the school adapted Rugby as the exclusive winter team sport for boys.
